I'd like to share with you a key to communication I've found to be essential. Here it is ... "responsibility".
My experience with all my clients and colleagues is that people do the best they know how, under the circumstances, with the tools they have at hand. People do what works for them... and that doesn't mean it necessarily works for everyone. The key is flexibility in, and responsibility for, our communications.
All of us are best served when we realize that they only thing we can truly control is ourselves. If you want to connect with others, bend your communication style to best suit the others. You'll discover that this approach yields the most results. If you don't like your outcome, change YOUR behaviour, not someone else's (because you can't change theirs, even if you wanted to). To try to change someone else is futile.
I have seen people spend years and tons of energy trying to change the way others communicate, only to discover that it yields nothing but frustration. Want results? Change yourself. That's the message I really truly believe best serves everyone. And that to me equates to sucking up responsibility for creating our own environments. We all have impact, and we alone decide, by our actions, if that impact will be positive or negative.
